In the 10 days since Ol’ Boy in the White House took office, he’s caused a raucous throughout the entire world. I won’t go into the details, but I invite you to view the following video from Australian journalist, Waleed Aly, who discussed everything that’s happened since the change in leadership.Needless to say, Trump has truly showed his full orange ass since taking office and theres a recurring theme that continues coming up in conversation with my peers is :where do we go from here? What can we do? These are conversations that I’m having with my students and peers alike.
Honestly, it has been a tough time with everything happening to find the joy or happiness in this life of ours and over the weekend, I was reminded of the power of convening with your tribe. After class, I had the opportunity to share a meal with two of my cohort mates and one of my favorite faculty members ever, and we had an empowering conversation about everything taking place. It was a space that I haven’t occupied since Trump was elected and something that I needed to get my mind right after continued attempts to undermine and harm people of color. We discussed what we are doing for our self care as Black people, methods we’re taking to express our advocacy, and the importance of staying connected. There is truly a war going on outside and no person of color is safe from. We have to stand up and resist the normalcy that media and others are trying to perpetuate with Ol’ Boy in the White House. It’s foolish and detrimental to the progresss that we’ve made in the last eight years. Trump has made it clear that he is not about the people despite their best attempts to believe otherwise. Come on, cognitive dissonance!
As we’ve seen over the last few years, we have more power than we know as a people. From Trayvon Martin protests to the fight for our immigrant brothers/sisters over the weekend, we will not be denied our rights and equity in this America. If not for ourselves, at least for our children. That joining of community empowered me to not give up the fight and continue to have faith in the Most High to keep fighting. It’s tiring. It’s hurtful, but fighting is needed. You may not be in protests or getting arrested, but it is imperative that you find your advocacy in these times. You’re more than you know and you have a light that the world needs to see. #
If you’re wondering what other things you can do outside of protesting, check out this wonderful piece of information to find other ways to get involved in the fight for justice. As this awesome Black queen taught her 3rd grade class, we have to #Pushthrough!
What a lovely reflection! I hope you continue to have the more of these conversations, if not for self-care purposes, then for grounding purposes. I’ve been arguing the cognitive dissonance point since the election – it’s great to see someone else agree.

Thank you! We have to keep going and not be deterred by the #alternativefacts that seem to flood our timelines and social media. We are definitely in a time where the people are being taken as fools and we cannot allow this to happen.. at least not on my watch!-J
